A civil society organization, Smoke-Free Nollywood and the National Board of Film and Video Censors, launched a digital media campaign on Tuesday to ban smoking scenes in home videos aimed at children.

At the opening ceremony in Abuja, Smoke Free Nollywood Creative Director Ms. Esther Aghotor pointed out that smoking in films has harmful psychological effects on children. She says research studies have found that more than a third of current adult smokers started smoking as a result of the film’s influence.

She said: “The campaign video, titled ‘Kids Are Watching’, demonstrates the harmful effects of smoking in films in a significant way as it affects underage members of their audience. “The partnership with the National Board of Film and Video Censors demonstrates the agency’s commitment to promoting the public health and safety of moviegoers, particularly children, who are the most impressionable members of society.

He announced that the video features veteran actress and filmmaker Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, among other cast members, urging their industry peers to refrain from advertising tobacco products in movies in the interest of public health.

According to the World Health Organization, more than 370,000 Nigerians smoke cigarettes and tobacco is the leading cause of cancer worldwide. Please note that the Nigerian National Tobacco Control Act (NTC) 2015 and the NTC Regulations 2019 prohibit the advertising, promotion and sponsorship of tobacco products in entertainment,” she said.

In early 2021, #SmokeFreeNollywood launched an entertainment industry public announcement in support of Nollywood’s influential stars campaign including Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, Dakore Egbuson-Akande. Others included Osas Ighodaro, Anto Lecky, Meg Otanwa, Michelle Dede, Kayode Kasum, Daniel Effiong, Linda Ejiofor, Kiki Omeili, and Imoh Emmanuel Chimezie.
